It's completely natural to be wary of the unknown, and this is no different when travelling to an unfamiliar country and experiencing a new culture.

The first thing that you need to do is conduct some research about where you will be travelling – external of where to stay, the best places to visit and tourist destinations to check out. This means doing some reading about the location you will be visiting, cultural customs, and important information that you need to know about the country. Every country is different and you need to have some background information about where you will be travelling.

  1. Secure travel documents and cash: Make sure to keep all your travel documents, your passport, and your money safe and secure at all times. 
  2. Don't flaunt high value items: Leave your high value jewelry and expensive belongings at home – thieves are always looking for tourist targets – Don't make yourself a target!
  3. If you are not sure, ask: No matter what it is, if you are not sure, it's important to ask. From food, to directions, places to visit, places to avoid, and more, ask questions to make sure you know what you are eating and where you are going. 
  4. Always be conscious of your surroundings: Whether you are on a resort or exploring the streets of a travel destination, always be aware of your surroundings, especially when at nightclubs or when enjoying a few drinks. 
  5. Prepare for the worst: While no one wants to lose their passport or travel documents when travelling, you need to be prepared. Always make copies and have a list of emergency phone numbers to call if you need assistance. 
  6. Get travel insurance: Having travel insurance, especially when travelling to a place you have never been to in the past, is very important. It is one of those things that you probably will not need, but will happy you have it if you find yourself in a situation where you need to make a claim.
