5 Tourist Scams to Watch Out for when on Vacation

Going on vacation is meant to be a time to kick back and relax. But, if you plan on taking a vacation in a country that you are not familiar with, you need to understand the potential threats that exist. In many countries, unsuspecting tourists are a target for many thieves. This is why it’s important to be aware of some of the most common tourist scams.

  1. Let me take your picture: Be cautious when someone offers to take your picture. They might just want to steal your camera or your phone.
  2. Wandering Taxi: One of the oldest scams going is taxi drivers giving you the run around and taking you the long way. Be aware of where you are and how long it will take to travel to your destination.
  3. Fake police: Thieves commonly pose a police and accuse tourists of fake crimes in order to try to get money from them. Watch out for this and for other real police that have crooked intentions.
  4. Rare Merchandise:  Merchants will do anything to sell you something. Don’t fall for the rare merchandise trick and pay a premium price for a common item.
  5. Distractions: Many thieves work in tandem with others. While one distracts you, the other steals something from you. Watch out for this.
