5 Reasons to Travel During Winter

February 4th, 2016  |  Travel Insurance

It’s that time of the year again. It’s the time when we double up on our socks to keep warm, zip up our coats to shield the chilling wind and drink hot beverages to stay warm. Yes, that’s right it’s winter in Canada.

I don’t know about you, but I have a love and hate relationship with winter. I think the snow-filled landscapes are beautiful, but I really hate the cold weather. I used to think that travel during winter was a bad idea, but as I get older I’m really starting to enjoy the winter getaway.

Just in case you need a good reason to ditch the cold – other than staying warm – here are five good reasons to plan a getaway this winter:

1. Hotels are cheaper

Cities south of the border cater to Canadians who want to flee to warmer climates. However, you don’t need to go to Florida to enjoy a winter vacation. I live in Montreal and even northern U.S. cities such as New York are warmer in the winter.

Check discount travel websites like Priceline to find cheap hotel rooms. I booked a four-star hotel in New York City for only $87 a night. I would have paid double the price if I booked in July.

2. Flights aren’t overbooked

Travelling during the summer (a.k.a. peak) tourist season can be extremely overwhelming. Airplanes are packed to capacity and it takes a lot more time to do anything such as get through airport security and find a cab after your arrival.

3. Fewer people crowding the city

Travel during winter (when most people are staying warm at home) can make the trip a lot faster, simpler, and less chaotic. Keep in mind there is always an exception to the rule, such as booking a vacation to Mexico or Florida during February’s reading week or March’s spring break is probably not the best idea. Prices skyrocket and there will definitely be lots of tourist crowds. Travel during winter during other times, though, and you can save and avoid the crowds.

4. Experience the holidays in foreign countries

Have you ever wondered what it’s like during Christmas in France or South Africa? Have you ever wanted to ring in the New Year in Spain or Thailand? Well those holidays only come once a year so if they’re on your list the winter is the only time to do it.

5. Outdoor sport activities

Some people love to swim in the ocean and bask in the sun, but some others prefer to hit the slopes. If you want to ski in Colorado or Sweden, you’ll have to do it between November and April. Of course dates can vary depending on the weather, but overall the winter is the best season for skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor activities.

When you travel during winter, don’t forget to buy travel insurance before you leave. You never know when you’ll have an accident or an emergency. That may sound like a downer, but the truth is the last thing you want is to be injured in a foreign country with no way to seek medical help or pay for the expenses.

With the right planning, you can have an amazing winter trip without breaking the bank.
