5 DIY Home Renovation Tips that all homeowners need to think about

March 27th, 2013  |  Insurance

Spring often signals the start of the home renovation season. Now that you have had the winter to think about and plan the work you will do on your home this spring and into the summer, it is now time to get started. But, before you start ripping down walls, or spend a bunch of money on tools and supplies, it is a good idea to take a step back and consider these do it yourself home renovation tips.

  1. Focus on one area at a time: You can’t do everything all at once. This is why it is important to focus on one room, one project or one area at a time. Once you are done with one, then you can move on to another renovation project.
  2. Don’t be shy to ask for professional help: While you may be handy, it is a good idea to ask for professional help for renovation tasks that are outside of your skill level.
  3. Have a realistic timeline: You need to have a realistic timeframe to complete your project. Be realistic with your expectations.
  4. Double check your budget: Review your renovation budget a couple times to make sure that it is accurate and realistic. Don’t forget to plan for unexpected expenses because they will likely creep up once you get started.
  5.  Expect the unexpected: You never know what can happen once you start tearing down walls and altering your home. Expect the unexpected and be ready to deal with unforeseen circumstances.

Are you planning a home renovation project this spring? If so, what project are you tackling? Are you doing it yourself and using a contractor?
