4 Tips for Driving near Trucks on the Highway
Do you ever get nervous when you see a transport truck ahead or in your rear view mirror? If you do, you are not alone. The truth is that there are many drivers out there that are scared of driving near large trucks on the highway. Some people are even so fearful of trucks that they won’t even drive on the highway at all.
While large trucks can be intimidating, there is no need to be afraid of them. Trucks are just part of highway driving and you cannot avoid them. If you drive on the highway, trucks are going to be on the road. There is no getting around it.
But, there are a number of tips that drivers can follow to make their experience with trucks a more pleasant and safe one:
- Don’t drive in trucks blind spot: Driving in a truck’s blind spot is dangerous. If they cannot see your vehicle, the truck driver may attempt to change lanes. So, pass the truck if you have the opportunity and avoid driving near the right rear, right front, and mid left areas of the truck.
- Don’t cut in front of trucks: Forcing trucks to make a sudden stop or change in direction can be disastrous. Make sure that you give trucks enough space. Keep in mind that trucks need more time and space to stop safely.
- Follow at a safe distance: Follow at a safe distance behind trucks. Following too closely can restrict your visibility.
- Take extra care during bad weather: During poor weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow, be extra cautious around trucks. When the roads are wet they tend to spray water, snow and ice in the direction of your vehicle. Be prepared and make sure your wipers are on so you are not temporarily blinded.
