4 Steps for Handling an Auto Recall Like a Pro
2014 seems to be the year of the recall in the automotive industry. With all the major vehicle manufacturers seemingly recalling at least one of their vehicles this year, millions of car owners have been forced to take their vehicles in for repair. It has also created a lot of questions about what owners should do if their vehicle is recalled.
What is a Recall?
A vehicle recall happens when the vehicle manufacturer or auto safety association determines that a make or model has a safety issue or defect that does not meet defined safety standards. Auto makers are then required to recall affected vehicles and notify owners about the issue. Recalls do not mean your vehicle is in immediate danger. Often times, vehicles are recalled for precautionary reasons. The severity of the issue will be outlined as part of the recall.
What to do When your Car is Recalled
Don’t panic! Recalls are normal and in most instances they are quick and minor repairs that pose no serious threat to you or your vehicle.
- Educate yourself about the recall:Any major recall will be announced and covered by media outlets. Read up about the recall, and verify that your vehicle is included in the recall.
- Call your dealership:Calling your dealership is your next step. Give them a call and ask about the recall process and what you need to do in terms of booking an appointment.
- Expect a recall notice in the mail:Expect a recall notice in the mail from your auto manufacturer. This will outline everything you need to know about the recall process.
- Schedule an appointment:Book an appointment to have your vehicle repaired.
Even if it is a minor repair, it’s important to take your car in to have the issue resolved. Many dealerships suggest that you bring your car in to address the recall during your regular oil change appointment – This also allows you to avoid making an extra trip to the dealership.
Recall Repairs Do Not Cost You Money
One thing that many drivers do not realize is that taking your car in to the dealership to have the recalled issue fixed will not cost you anything. There is a misconception out there that you will have to pay for recall repairs – This is simply misinformation. Don’t let this prevent you from taking your car in to be repaired.
