3 Tips for Navigating Through a Crash Scene

October 26th, 2013  |  Insurance

Car accidents happen. They are bound to happen from time to time and it is part of driving. While many of them can be prevented, accidents can occur no matter how careful we are as drivers. Much is written about how to avoid getting into a car accident. But, what about knowing what to do if you get stuck behind an accident scene? Do you know what the proper protocol is?

Here are some much needed tips for drivers if they find themselves stuck behind the scene of an accident:

  1. Don’t be a lemming: Even if other drivers are choosing a dangerous option or maneuver to get around an accident scene, it doesn’t mean that you have to follow them. You could put yourself in a dangerous position. Sometimes it is better to wait it out.
  2. Follow police instructions: Police are on the scene for a reason. In addition to investing the cause of the accident, it is also their job to manage the traffic until the accident scene is clear. Follow all of their instructions; they have every driver’s safety in mind.
  3. Keep your eyes on the road: While it may be enticing to get a look at the scene of the accident, too many drivers take their attention off the road to get a look. These actions can lead to another accident. Fender benders happen all the time because drivers slow down to get a look.

Does driving past a car accident scene make you nervous? Are you guilty of slowing down to get a look?
